State Casket Sales and Restrictions: A Pointless Undertaking?
We utilize a new micro dataset of prices of funeral goods and services at individual funeral homes, plus data from the Census to examine the effects of state regulations that restrict entry into funeral goods market. In particular, some states have regulations that allow only licensed funeral homes to sell caskets, while others allow unlicensed retailers, such as Costco, to compete with funeral homes in the sale of caskets. However, as caskets and funeral services are complements, generally purchased in one-to-one proportions, it is not a priori clear that casket sale restrictions can expand the rent extraction capabilities of licensed funeral homes. Our results suggest that when courts lift funeral goods sales restrictions the prices of funeral goods fall but the prices of funeral services rise by nearly as much. Overall, our results support the "one monopoly rent" hypothesis; we do not find that overall funeral home revenues decline when funeral goods sales are lifted.

Great Plains Network - Kansas State University Agronomy Application Deep Dive
In May 2019, staff members from the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC) and members of the Great Plains Network (GPN) attending their Annual Meeting meeting met with researchers at Kansas State University (KSU) for the purpose of an Application Deep Dive training session. The goal of this training session was to help characterize the requirements for an agronomy application, to enable cyberinfrastructure support staff to better understand the needs of the researchers they support, and to offer training to GPN members to be able to conduct these on their own. Material for this event includes both the written documentation from the agronomy application at KSU, details about the infrastructure setup at KSU, and also a writeup of the discussion that took place in person on May 20, 2019.
EPOC, GPN, and KSU recorded a set of action items for this use case, continuing the ongoing support and collaboration. These are a reflection of the case study report, and in person discussion

Spectral variations of the X-ray binary pulsar LMC X-4 during its long period intensity variation and a comparison with Her X-1
We present spectral variations of the binary X-ray pulsar LMC X-4 using the
RXTE/PCA observations at different phases of its 30.5 day long super-orbital
period. Only out of eclipse data were used for this study. During the high
state of the super-orbital period of LMC X-4, the spectrum is well described by
a high energy cut-off power-law with a photon index in the range of 0.7-1.0 and
an iron emission line. In the low state, the spectrum is found to be flatter
with power-law photon index in the range 0.5-0.7. A direct correlation is
detected between the continuum flux in 7-25 keV energy band and the iron
emission line flux. The equivalent width of the iron emission line is found to
be highly variable during low intensity state, whereas it remains almost
constant during the high intensity state of the super-orbital period. It is
observed that the spectral variations in LMC X-4 are similar to those of Her
X-1 (using RXTE/PCA data). These results suggest that the geometry of the
region where the iron line is produced and its visibility with respect to the
phase of the super-orbital period is similar in LMC X-4 and Her X-1. A
remarkable difference between these two systems is a highly variable absorption
column density with phase of the super-orbital period that is observed in Her

A multiwavelength study of the remnant of nova GK Persei
We present new observations of the nebular remnant of the old nova GK Persei
1901, in the optical using the 2m HCT and at low radio frequencies using the
GMRT. The evolution of the nova remnant indicates shock interaction with the
ambient medium, especially in the southwest quadrant. Application of a simple
model for the shock and its evolution to determine the time dependence of the
radius of the shell in the southwest quadrant indicates that the shell is now
expanding into an ambient medium that has a lower density compared to the
density of the ambient medium ahead of the shock in 1987.There are indications
of a recent interaction of the nova remnant with the ambient medium in the
northeast quadrant also. The nova remnant of GK Per is detected at all the
observed radio frequencies and is of similar extent as the optical remnant.
Putting together our radio observations with VLA archival data on GK Per from
1997, we obtain three interesting results: 1. The spectrum above 1.4 GHz
follows a power law with an index -0.7 and below 1.4 GHz follows a power law
with an index ~ -0.85. This could be due to the presence of at least two
populations of electrons dominating the global emission at different
frequencies. 2. We record an annual secular decrease of 2.1% in the flux
density of the nova remnant at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz between 1984 and 1997 which has
left the spectral index unchanged at -0.7. No such decrease is observed in the
flux densities below 1 GHz. 3. We record an increase in the flux density at
0.33 GHz compared to the previous estimate in 1987. We conclude that the
remnant of nova GK Per is similar to supernova remnants and in particular, to

Single, intra-articular treatment with 6 ml hylan G-F 20 in patients with symptomatic primary osteoarthritis of the knee: a randomised, multicentre, double-blind, placebo controlled trial
International audienceObjectives: The primary objective was to compare a single, 6 ml, intra-articular injection of hylan G-F 20 with placebo in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. The safety of a repeat injection of hylan G-F 20 was also assessed. Methods: Patients with primary osteoarthritis knee pain were randomly assigned to arthrocentesis plus a 6 ml intra-articular injection of either hylan G-F 20 or placebo in a prospective, double-blind (one injector/one blinded observer) study. Results were evaluated at 4, 8, 12, 18 and 26 weeks post-injection. The primary outcome criterion was change from baseline over 26 weeks in Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) Osteoarthritis Index A pain. Secondary outcome measures included WOMAC A1 and C, patient global assessment (PGA) and clinical observer global assessment (COGA) and Outcome Measures in Rheumatology, Osteoarthritis Research Society International responder rates. A 4-week, open, repeat treatment phase evaluated safety only. Results: A total of 253 patients (Kellgren-Lawrence grade II or III) was randomly assigned. Patients receiving hylan G-F 20 experienced statistically significantly greater improvements in WOMAC A pain scores (-0.15, SE 0.076, p=0.047), and several of the secondary outcome measures (WOMAC A1, PGA and COGA), than patients receiving placebo. There was no difference between the safety results of the two groups. No increased risk of local adverse events was observed in the open, repeat treatment phase. Conclusions: This placebo-controlled study demonstrated that, in patients with knee osteoarthritis, a single 6 ml intra-articular injection of hylan G-F 20 is safe and effective in providing statistically significant, clinically relevant pain relief over 26 weeks, with a modest difference versus placebo
To be Makiran is to see like Mr Parrot: the anthropology of wonder in Solomon Islands
This article lays out a general thesis for the development of a comparative ethnographic approach to the anthropology of wonder. It suggests that wonder is both an index and a mode of challenge to existing ontological premises. Through analytical engagement with the theme of wonder in Western philosophy and the anthropology of ontology, it extends this thesis to include the corollary that different ontological premises give rise to different wonders. Ethnographically, the article supports these claims via analysis of wonder discourses among the Arosi of Solomon Islands. These discourses, it is argued, both respond to and promote ontological transformations in a context where the premises at stake are neither those of the Cartesian dualism commonly ascribed to modernity nor of the relational non-dualism commonly ascribe to anthropology’s ethnographic ‘others’, but of a non-Cartesian pluralism termed poly-ontology
